Weather Radars in Argentina: National Coverage

What are weather radars and why are they key in Argentina?

Weather radars are essential instruments for detecting precipitation, severe storms, hail, and strong winds in real time. In a country as vast and with climates as varied as Argentina, having a radar network that covers the national territory is fundamental for disaster prevention and risk management.

Currently, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) coordinates the National System of Meteorological Radars (SINARAME), a project that seeks to expand and modernize radar coverage throughout the country.

The National System of Meteorological Radars (SINARAME)

SINARAME is a joint initiative between the SMN, the Ministry of Defense, the National Water Institute (INA), and other entities. Its goal is to deploy a radar network that allows monitoring severe phenomena with greater precision and anticipation.

Main objectives

  • Expand radar coverage to the entire Argentine territory, including remote areas.
  • Improve early detection of storms, hail, and strong winds.
  • Provide real-time data for early warning and decision-making.
  • Integrate information with other monitoring and forecasting systems.

Current radar coverage in Argentina

To date, Argentina has a radar network that partially covers the territory. According to SMN data, there are around 15 operational radars, strategically distributed in regions with the highest meteorological risk.

Geographic distribution

  • Pampas Region: High density of radars due to the frequency of severe storms and hail. Includes radars in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Santa Fe, and La Pampa.
  • Northwest (NOA): Coverage in Salta, Jujuy, and Tucumán, areas prone to intense storms and hail.
  • Northeast (NEA): Radars in Misiones, Corrientes, and Chaco, to monitor convective systems and intense precipitation.
  • Cuyo: Coverage in Mendoza and San Juan, with emphasis on summer storms and Zonda wind.
  • Patagonia: Limited but expanding coverage, with radars in Neuquén, Río Negro, and Chubut.

Despite these advances, there are still areas with insufficient coverage, especially in deep Patagonia and the Amazon region.

Importance of national coverage

National radar coverage is crucial for several reasons:

  • Disaster prevention: Allows issuing early warnings for severe storms, hail, flash floods, and strong winds.
  • Agriculture: Agricultural producers can make informed decisions about planting, harvesting, and crop protection.
  • Aviation: Radar information is vital for air safety, avoiding areas of turbulence and intense precipitation.
  • Water resource management: Helps predict river floods and plan water use.

Challenges and future projects

One of the main challenges is Argentina's geography: the vast extension and hard-to-reach areas complicate the installation and maintenance of radars. However, there are ongoing projects to incorporate state-of-the-art technology, such as dual-polarization radars, which improve discrimination between types of precipitation.

Planned expansion

The SINARAME plan contemplates the installation of new radars at strategic points, such as southern Patagonia and the Litoral region. It is expected that by 2025 the network will reach 20 operational radars, providing more complete coverage.

How to access radar information

The SMN makes real-time radar images available to the public through its website and mobile applications. Additionally, applications like Contingencias offer personalized alerts based on radar data, so users are prepared for any meteorological event.

Conclusion

Weather radars are indispensable tools for Argentina's safety and development. Although coverage has improved significantly in recent decades, there is still a way to go to achieve a complete national network. With projects like SINARAME and technological advances, the country is moving towards a more robust and efficient monitoring system, benefiting all sectors of society.
